Probably the reason is because being the highest point of the Park, you feel much closer to the magnificent Mount Rainier with clear views of the glaciers all around! Do visit the Visitor Center for inquiring the trail conditions of the area before you are exploring this area. This is a great scenic drive, with plenty of points of interest along the way. Mau Loa o Mauna Ulu is a great pull-out spot on this scenic road. It is here that you will witness an expanse of lava flows that have covered the entire landscape. You will come across a small picnic area before the Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs area. Petroglyphs always amaze us since you can see the imprints of our previous civilizations through them. Probably one of the best locations to capture rainbow-colored rocks! This is the largest deposits of petrified wood in the park. Next up is Tawa Point. Highly recommended Painted Desert Rim Trail starts from this point. This trail takes you through juniper shrubland atop the volcanic rock to the historic Painted Desert Inn. As you walk by, you will come across some information boards about the flora and fauna of this region put up by the park officials. The trail had patches of snow, but it was easy to follow. Phantom ship is the smallest island in the Crater Lake which derives its name as it resembles a ghost ship. It is natural rock formation and it is about 500 ft by 200 ft in size. On the way, we stopped at Vidae Falls which has an adjoining picnic area. Along with several trails, the lake has a beautiful campground surrounded by Ponderosa trees. Fishing, Kayaking, and Canoeing are also allowed in the lake. Cinder Cone Trail is a challenging trail but provides one with a highly rewarding experience. The trailhead is Butte Lake Parking Area. It is at 8017 ft and near to the Bryce Lodge Canyon and the North Campground Store. From Sunrise Point, you will see the first glimpses of the beautiful red, pink sandstone hoodoos scenery. Spend some time soaking in the views and if you fancy a hike Queens Garden trail (~ 2 miles out and back) starts from this viewpoint, which is an easier hike into the canyon. After Sunrise point, make a stop at Sunset Point. This is the most popular Fruita District Area of the park. Because of the abundance of orchards in this region, it is named as Fruita. This area was originally a Mormon settlement established on the banks of Fremont River. We took a quick stop in the parking area for the trailheads of Hickman Bridge/Rim Overlook/Navajo Knobs Trail, to check the Capitol Dome (6120 ft high). Capitol Dome was the inspiration behind the name of the Park. This trail is heavily trafficked. It is a 0.7-mile loop trail. Along with the towering Redwoods, you can also access the Smith River. Redwood Groves is really picturesque with ferns on the floor. Our first adventurous hike for the day was Tall Trees Trail – World’s tallest Trees. This is a free permit trail with only 50 permits given out each day, on a first-come-first-served basis. The parking lot for the trailhead from the visitor center is ~16 miles. From US 101, get onto the scenic Bald Hills Road for 7 miles before getting to the Tall Trees gate. Access Permit has a gate code combination. This is an 11.2-mile hike trail. We would recommend anyone planning to visit Redwood National park to definitely consider hiking this loop if you can. The trail starts from the parking area of the visitor center. It takes you through Groves of Coastal Redwoods, finally leading to the Gold Bluffs Beach. You can dip your feet in the water and then walk along the sand towards the Fern Canyon. The entire route has multiple stops to enjoy the radiant redwoods. This is the main scenic drive and definitely one of the great drives to learn about the history of the Redwoods in general. We entered through the Avenue of the Giants south entrance which is ~ 230 miles from SFO and the start of the scenic drive. At the entrance, you can make a stop and click the information board which has details about the scenic drive and map in general. As you keep driving through the scenic drive, South Fork Eel River keeps you company on one side. The trail splits into Miner’s Ridge Trail and James Irvine Trail. We had planned to hike down the Miner’s Ridge Trail and then hike up the James Irvine Trail to complete our loop. The reason for doing this was only to avoid crowds and the strategy worked! There were few climbs but for the most part, we were hiking down through the hills of these archaic Groves. We took our sweet time as we captured the magnificent coastal redwoods through our lenses. Also, banana slug one of the natives of Redwood Forest can be seen in plenty on the trail. Yellowstone is not only about geysers and hot springs, but it also has this entire canyon range with some amazing waterfalls and hikes. The canyon is twenty miles long, 4,000-feet wide and 1,200-feet deep in some places. The Lower Falls plunges steeply into the canyon 308 feet and the Upper Falls tumbles 109 feet. We first took the South Rim Drive and made our stop for Upper Falls View. The next stop was at the Artist Point. This point has been aptly named since we saw one of the most spectacular views of the canyons and the waterfalls. This entire section of the park is uniquely different than the geothermal areas we visited the day before. We spent two hours wandering through the boardwalk areas looking through the Porcelain Basin and Back Basin. This trail leads you to the base of Lower Falls. The trail consists of over 300 steel steps and you get to see some electrifying views of the Lower falls in this roughly 1-mile round trip hike. The waterfall was pounding the rocks with its majestic flows and we were able to witness a rainbow as we were descending the steel staircase. After the South Rim Drive, we headed towards North Rim Drive. We were also able to capture “Bald Eagle” soaring in the sky. Mud Volcano: On the boardwalk here, you will notice an array of mud-pots, fumaroles, and hot springs.
